Decorating Part 2

Decorating Part 2

Decorating is the embellishment of a promotional product with a logo, a name, a picture, or whatever you want. There is a wide variety of processes that can be used.

In part 1 we mainly covered apparel decorating techniques. - all forms of apparel, such as shirts, pants and various clothing accessories, even footwear. Besides clothing, towels, think fleece blankets, etc. are also included.

In part 2 we'll cover the techniques used to decorate "hard goods," i.e. non apparel products. Pricing for these techniques is based on quantity.

Anatomy of a Promotional Product Order 1, 2, 3

Earlier this year we published a 3 part series titled Anatomy of a Promotional Products Order.

The guide laid out a blueprint for designing and executing a successful promo or corporate apparel project. We outlined the timeline of a project and what information and tasks happened at each stage. We talked about art files, what kind are acceptable and what types won't work. We covered logo design and common pitfalls to avoid as well as the color systems used in the promo industry.

Here we've condensed it into 1 post.

Promo Lingo Deciphered

Promo, like any industry, sport or hobby, has its own language. It's replete with acronyms and mysterious abbreviations. We tend to sling them around indiscriminately, often resulting in our clients responding with "huh?"

As a way to make amends and arm you with information to help you navigate promo lingo we offer this guide.

Our jumping off point will be the pricing grid with its columns of quantities and prices.

Let's get started.

Promo Trends for May to June

Here are the top ten promo products from June. Bags, shirts and pens once again kept their top 3 positions. Mugs dropped from 6 to 7. Tumblers went down from 4 to 5. Caps went up from 5 to 4. Awards went down from 9 to 10. Bottles dropped from 7to 8. Towels jumped up from 8 to 6. And, awards replaced notebooks in the number 10 slot.

The only summer hoodies you'll ever need (or want!)

My favorite weather is when it's warm enough for shorts but just cool enough for long sleeves. A sunny day with just a bit of a chill to make you want to cover up with this super soft hoodie with UPF 30+ sun protection.

Where will you wear yours?

A late afternoon with an adult beverage while sitting on an outdoor deck overlooking the harbor?

Sitting around an early evening camp fire?

A late afternoon taking the dog for a walk?

Limbo Stick - yes we can get them!

Every now and then when I'm researching products for a client something truly odd will pop up. This item was so off-the-wall not even close to what I was looking for that I was surprised to learn that I could even source it.

So much for the infallibility of AI searches!

Anyway, I thought I would share this with you first because it is so unusual and second, isn't it good to know that if you ever wanted this or something equally odd we can probably source it for you.

Trader Joe's Style Tote Bag

Anna Rahmanan of the Brooklyn Magazine wrote a great story titled "Inside The Viral Trader Joe's Mini-Tote Craze." In her story she chronicles how this tote bag, which Trader Joe's sells for $2.99, blew up on TikTok and was selling for $500 on eBay. Here's the link to Anna's story.

I wanna my Owala

I wanna my Owala

First launched in March of 2020, the Owala water bottles, especially the Freesip deign - were an instant hit on TikTok. They're featured on Amazon and the Target website. In addition to their sleek design and pastel colors, they offer many user friendly features. The bottle has a wide opening making it very easy to add ice or clean. The lid on the Freesip has a lock making it spill proof. You can sip through the straw or "slurp" through the opening.
Unfortunately they've become a victim of their own success with overwhelming demand far outstripping supply. Owala did not anticipate the strength of demand from the promotional products industry along with their continued popularity on the retail side. As a result they are virtually impossible to find in the promotional products market.

There are over 800,000 products, including branded apparel, in the promo products industry and you need to pick just the right item for your event. Overwhelmed yet? Let us offer you some guidance and our expertise.

The worst fate for a promo product is that it never makes it out of the trade show, conference or event. Imagine leaving an event and seeing your promo item in the trash receptacle.

WHAT ABOUT ART?
A.K.A."art file," artwork," or just "art," as in "send me the art for your trade show lanyards."
Call it a mine field, quicksand, or the 7th circle of hell, issues with art can cause your project to derail.
The two types of art files universally used for promo projects are Photoshop '.eps' and Adobe Illustrator, '.ai'. These are vector art which are created from mathematical formulas and can be scaled to any size. They do not pixilate, they maintain the integrity of the design.
Some suppliers can use a high resolution '.pdf' and a .'jpg' is preferable for paper napkins.
Have your art file(s) ready to go before you start your project. Well before.
TIP Do not send .svg, .png, .tiff, or .gif files unless you want us to convert them. There will be a small charge for this.

Color systems and promotional products

RGB vs. CMYK vs. PMS: A Color Showdown
These three color systems might seem interchangeable, but each plays a specific role in the world of visuals. Let's break down their similarities, differences, and their common applications.
The Three Major Color Systems
  • RGB (Red, Green, Blue): This is an Additive model, it uses light emitted by individual pixels to create colors. It’s most commonly used for digital displays like TVs, monitors, and smartphones.
  • CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black): This is known as a Subtractive model, it uses inks that absorb specific wavelengths of light to create colors. It’s used in printing applications like brochures, magazines, and packaging.
  • PMS (Pantone Matching System): This is a standardized numbering system for creating specific ink mixtures, ensuring consistent color reproduction across different printing processes.
It is the preferred color model for branding applications like logos,
packaging, and marketing materials where precise color matching
is crucial. This is the standard for the promotional products industry.

Apparel Trends for 2021 - For Work & Outdoors

Apparel Trends for 2021 - For Work & Outdoors

Multifunctional apparel that is rugged, made to last and designed as both workwear and comfortable outdoor wear, are items that you can present to your team as uniforms or as part of an onboarding package. Part of this trend is lighter, more day-to-day outdoor experiences—like running errands, taking the kids to and from practice and walking the dog—with apparel catering toward fashion colors and hyper customization.
The popularity toward jackets and outdoor adventure wear may, in part, reflect consumers’ growing desire to spend more time outdoors following a pandemic year that was, for millions, spent mainly indoors.
In an October 2020 survey of 2,058 adults conducted by The Harris Poll of Q4 consumer trends:
·   71% of respondents said they were interested in taking walks around their towns or neighborhood in the aftermath of pandemic-related social distancing measures,
·   58% said they’d be interested in spending time in a public park,
·   55% said visiting a drive-in or outdoor movie,
·   52% said hiking or camping,
·   52% said visiting outside pop-up retail stores and,
·   38% said attending outdoor exercise classes.
We want to get back outside!
With the split in workers looking to return to the office and those who prefer to stay home, and with uncertainties still surrounding the pandemic, you can benefit from offering your team apparel that’s a mix of work-appropriate, work-from-home-appropriate and outdoor adventure, in styles that are timeless and endlessly useful, particularly in today’s world.
With that in mind, here are some suggestions we’ve pulled together that reflect the best 2021 apparel trends.

Screen time + eye strain = poor sleep

Screen time + eye strain = poor sleep

With all our Zoom meetings and with our kids going back to school remotely, we
are going to be staring at our screens for long stretches of time. Looking at
those screens exposes us to blue light which can cause eye strain, fatigue and, in some cases, headaches. A recent study in the Harvard Business Review found that exposure to blue light makes it more difficult for us to get a good night's sleep. You can read the study here.
Glasses that block blue light can alleviate eye strain, fatigue, and headaches. They also will help you get a better night's sleep. And who couldn't use that!
We have three recommendations and all do an equally effective job of blocking blue light.

The Perfect Golf Gift

The Perfect Golf Gift

Golf is the most frustrating game, ever! There's a concept in psychology known as "random reinforcement." Basically what it means is that the little lab animal has no idea when it's getting the food. No idea at all because getting the food has absolutely nothing to do with any consistent behavior on the animal's part. The reward is totally random - and it is the most powerful type of reinforcement. Golf is like that. You can hit a beautiful shot and have no idea what you did right or how to duplicate it. But, it gets you psyched to continue playing, and that my friends, is random reinforcement at its most insidious. Golf is also addictive because it has such cool and expensive equipment. If you have even the most casual relationship with golf you know exactly what I mean. And, there's always some new item or article of clothing to acquire. And we have the newest hot golf product available; it's brand new to the market, tremendously useful and it's not that expensive. You will not see this anywhere else. The golf towel with a patented brush for cleaning your clubs. The brush is permanently bonded to the towel and is positioned so that your logo is always visible. If you've ordered golf towels before you know that your logo can get lost in the folds of the towel but not with this one. Club makers suggest using only plastic brushes to clean club heads. These brushes are made with no metal and are the perfect cleaning tool. They are very durable. When it gets dirty just throw it in the washer and dryer. The brush comes in 6 colors and if you order 300+ towels you can mix both the base and bristle colors. Golf season will be here before you know it and in some parts of the country it never ends. This new-fangled golf towel will be sure to please. And, no one else will have it.

Lost?

This probably never happens to you so you can skip this and go back to what you were doing. However, for the rest of us who bumble and stumble through our days; who misplace things; who end up ransacking our pocket books, jacket pockets, drawers and closet floors; those of us who get half way to the car, start patting our jacket pockets looking for those darn keys; those of us who are already late and are frantically upending everything on the counter or desk top looking for that elusive set of keys - Aha! Here is your salvation! Here's how it works: Attach the Bluetooth enabled tag to your key chain...download the app. When you've lost your keys simply open the app and press 'find.' Scout will start ringing. Follow the sound and the geographical features on the app to get your keys back. "Aha!" you say..."I haven't lost my keys, I've lost my phone! What now, Scout?" You can call your phone by pressing a button on Scout. Scout is battery operated with no standby feature which would use up a lot of battery. You can use Scout anytime, anywhere without having to worry about turning it off. This is a great event gift. It's a natural for a brand launch, a milestone celebration, an employee recognition event. You are not going to see "Scout" everywhere. Your brand will be very visible with this well-designed and very useful piece of technology.

Building customer relations

Building customer relations

Well, here it is - again - The New Year. The time of new beginnings and the inevitable, perennial, and almost guaranteed to fail New Year's Resolutions! (So, that begs the question - why even bother?) Far and away the most frequently evoked category of resolutions is "self improvement." As in, "This year I'm going to (insert lofty self improvement goal here).... Right behind is the work related resolution, "I'm going to get organized." But this resolution is one you can actually do something about and build good customer relations at the same time. This is a foam cube to help organize some of your desk top clutter. Your customers or staff will assemble it and then use the calendar to help plan their day and week. The cube/puzzle has holes and slots to form a desktop organizer. It measures 3" on each side and arrives flat at 10.75" x 7.25" Your customers assemble it and they see your logo and the calendar - then organize their pens, rulers and scissors in it. Your logo is there every day! If you're in mortgage lending, banking, insurance or home construction take a look at this house shaped foam organizer. Flat it measures 9.5" x 8.5" so it can easily be mailed. It assembles at 3.5" x 3.5". Your message is there every day. People will have fun putting these together and they'll have your message and logo right on their desk - very nice real estate for you to occupy. Give us a call now that it's the beginning of the new year and you can help your customers or staff actually accomplishes one of their New Year's Resolutions

A Quality Corporate Gift

A Quality Corporate Gift

Corporate gift giving at holiday time can be a harrowing experience. What to get? How to appeal to a variety of constituents? What's something that will appeal to both women and men? How to pick something that properly reflects the value of your brand? Despite the proliferation of our devices with screens we still take notes in notebooks at meetings. Many of us still write our appointments in our planners. (Planners and notebooks don't run out of power!) The Moleskine notebook is a quality product and you'll be proud to brand it with your corporate name. Moleskin is a heavy cotton fabric that is woven in such a fashion that it has a very soft pile and feel. It's a bit like chamois and not as plush as velour. Notebooks and planers from the Italian company Moleskine are coveted for their quality and prestige. The Cahier notebook featured here is just one of their many fine offerings. Give me a call and we can go over the entire line from Moleskine and select the right corporate gift for your clients and best prospects. Cheers, Robert

Team Building in 1 Hour & Not Much Money

•Are you bored to tears by "trust falls"? •Have you had it with "tell us one thing that nobody knows about you"? •Or, how about, "If you were an animal, what would you be and why"? •What about the one where you have to go around the room, find the person who has the same colored dot on their name badge as you and then find out what you have in common? Yecch! •Plus, it costs a fortune to have some team building guru come in and subject everyone to this stuff. If you are looking for a solution, here's one that is guaranteed to work: ice cream. Everybody loves ice cream and when you're all standing around eating ice cream and having a good time you are bound to start talking and developing connections. Voila! Team building. Football Schedule Magnets

I know, I know - you think I'm nuts to be talking about ideas for the Fall. Summer has barely started (at least here in New England). And there haven't been that many really hot summery kind of days. But, with the Red Sox playing like they have so far, maybe fast forwarding to the Fall isn't such a bad idea. As I mentioned in the headline...sooner than you know, it's later than you think. So being a little prepared for Fall promotional products isn't so farfetched. Here's an affordable idea for keeping your name in front of your clients and prospects. Football schedule magnets will be in every cubicle, on every refrigerator, on every file cabinet. If there's a flat vertical metal surface someone's going to put up a magnet football schedule and it might as well be yours. Here are two ideas - we have more. Dial up an audible and give us a call. We can help you pick the right schedule for your marketing message and audience. You will score a touchdown with this promotional item! The Problem With Picnics

Summer is upon us with its full menu of outdoor activities. All of these activities are wonderful opportunities for corporate branding and getting your name noticed. No activity says "Summer" quite like a picnic. Theoretically, picnics are perfectly delightful. Getting outdoors, usually in a pleasant setting, having the food and drink...ah! What an idyllic picture. If you've ever actually staged a picnic, you know first-hand how reality can rapidly depart from theory. Getting the food and drink prepared and lugging it to the picnic site. The picnic area is not quite the perfectly manicured greensward you had imagined. You're not crazy about spending the afternoon sitting on the ground. As the saying goes, be prepared! Here are 3 solutions to your picnic and other outdoor activities problems. You can brand these terrific products with your logo and give them to your grateful customers (and future customers). The collapsible cooler makes a lot of sense. At the end of the day just fold it up. No large cumbersome cooler to lug back to the car. This sturdy folding chair features two cup holders and a carrying bag. Both the chair and the bag can be imprinted with your logo. This chair is very useful for picnics, sporting events and outdoor concerts...multiple venues for your brand to be noticed. The 4-in-1 serves multiple roles - it's a picnic blanket, a tote bag, seat cushion and a weather protector. Think of all the seasonal events and activities these products can be used for. Picnics, the kid's sports games, outdoor concerts...you get the idea. Each of these items have a lot of real estate for your logo. Because they're so versatile your logo will be seen everywhere. Give us a call and we will help you choose the right item for your message and your budget. It's summer and a great time of year to get your logo out there and noticed. Cheers, Robert

How Does It Know?

I was quite amazed (and mystified) when I first saw this product. Here is a seemingly simple and straightforward double walled acrylic tumbler. There are no wires, no software, no bluetooth and yet it keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. How does it know? The answer, of course, is that it doesn't know and it doesn't care. The secret is in the double wall construction. This allows the tumbler to keep hot liquids hotter for longer and cold liquids colder for longer. Even better, the double wall construction makes it more comfortable to hold a hot drink and there is no sweating when it's a cold drink. What a great "welcome" gift for employees moving into new office space. Pair this with packages of hot chocolate or ice tea mix. These would be a nice addition to a room drop/pillow gift. Resorts can make these available as a guest amenity. Your guests can go home with a tangible souvenir. How about using them as a sales call "leave behind." Insert your sales sheet and brochure along with the packages of ice tea or coffee. However you use them, put it all in a nice gift bag and voila - a great little gift. Both can be imprinted in full color graphics and an open/close lid is available. These tumblers are made of crystal clear acrylic and are quite substantial in look and feel. Send us your logo and we'll do a virtual for you.

Its was a dark and stormy night

That's the opening sentence of the 1830 novel Paul Clifford by English novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton. It's often ridiculed as being the poster child for bad, melodramatic prose. There's nothing melodramatic about calling this umbrella a lifesaver. It has a full 1" band of reflective material on all panels. On any dark and stormy night this will surely stand out. It has a generous 42" arc and the canopy is vented so it won't be blown inside out. The frame is windproof with a sturdy metal shaft. It folds down to 15" so you're not dragging around some huge contraption. And...it's auto open! What is more annoying than fumbling around trying to open an umbrella in the pouring rain? For not a lot of money this is a gift that will be appreciated, retained and used. Isn't that just what you want from your promotional products? The snow has stopped (we hope!) but next up are the Spring rains. See your logo showing up all over town on this practical item! Send us your logo and we'll do a free virtual of your design. It might be a dark and stormy night but you and your customers will be safe and dry under your Lifesaver Reflective Umbrella!

If it's good enough for Presidents

If it's good enough for Presidents

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you don't sign a lot of treaties or legislation. I'm going to take a leap of faith and assume that you weren't present when Queen Elizabeth signed The Commonwealth Charter. Had you been to either of these events you might have come away with a very nice souvenir. Both the President and the Queen used the Townsend pen from AT Cross. AT Cross is America's oldest manufacturer of fine writing instruments. Founded by Richard Cross in 1846 their first factory was in Providence RI. They introduced the Townsend line in 1991. The Townsend is available as a ballpoint, roller ball or fountain pen. You have a choice of finishes: •Black lacquer •Quartz blue lacquer •Platinum plated •10k gold plated •Lustrous chrome As the ultimate finishing touch, the pen can be decorated with the recipient's signature. (See the image of President Obama) I don't have to tell you that this is not going to be your tradeshow giveaway pen. However, if you want to recognize significant business partners or stellar performers in your company - this is the way to do it. So, give me a call and let's discuss how you can incorporate this iconic writing instrument into your recognition campaign. And, of course, AT Cross offers a range of other pens that reflect their world-renowned quality and carry their lifetime warranty. Cheers, Robert

Just a bit fit

Here's the deal. It is now almost the end of January. Do you know where your New Year's resolutions are? It is common knowledge that gym memberships and attendance peak in January and then plummet in February. As a matter of fact, one very popular work out place in Manhattan has capacity for 300 people but has sold 6,000 memberships. That's how predictable the fall off in attendance is. So, what to do about this? How do you motivate staff or encourage associates to keep on the right fitness path? We all know that if we write down our goals and monitor our progress, we are more likely to achieve them. The Fitbit Flex Tracker does that for your fitness activities. This slim and stylish device is with you all the time. During the day it tracks your steps, the distance you've covered. and the calories burned. At night it tracks your sleep quality and wakes you silently in the morning. Just check out the lights to see how you stack up against your personal goals. Write In Time for Flu Season

This is the time of year when I find myself opening doors with my elbow. Or pulling down my jacket or sweater sleeve to cover my hand and then opening the door. I'm like a surgeon washing my hands in a public restroom. I use my elbows to operate the faucets. Thank goodness most paper towel dispensers are motion activated. I sound like a real germaphobe..at least I'm not as bad as Howard Hughes. I just don't like getting a cold and being out of action. Large gatherings are particularly tricky. It's a little socially awkward to introduce yourself, shake hands and then go for the hand sanitizer. This is especially so with conferences, educational or training sessions and sales meetings. How to buy the perfect conevtion tote bag

The disappearing convention tote or What the experts do that you should know... January 2nd and the convention, conference, and tradeshow season begins. Every January the promotional products industry holds its largest trade show, "The Expo." It covers 2 floors of the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. There are about 1500 - 1800 exhibitors, all showing their latest promo products...all with samples, giveaways and catalogs. In the corridors just outside the exhibit floors are racks and racks of tradeshow bags for attendees, supplied by 3 or 4 of the bag companies. They're prominently decorated with their names and booth number. They feature their best full color graphics. They are LARGE! Large is good! Why? Well they know that as attendees go around picking up catalogs, literature and samples the small bags will fill up quickly. What happens then? Those small bags go right into the large bags. If yours is the big bag it will be your logo that's seen throughout the entire convention, tradeshow, conference. Want the big bag? Pick either of these recommendations. Both are: Sturdy, made from 100GMS nonwoven polypropylene. Plenty of capacity, both are 16" x 14" x 6" The "Ultimate" has 2 biz card holders & utility pocket on both ends The "Burst" has side pockets Both have adjustable shoulder straps. Don't be the company with a small tote that can't hold enough and disappears into one of these. Order before the end of January and we'll waive the setup charges.

What a pain! But here's the solution...bluetooth wireless headphones. These are only 2 of the stylish wireless headphones available. We have many more at various price points. Both deliver a high quality audio experience, they're lightweight and can switch from music to talk. Plus, they'll display your logo prominently. Call me now. Keep the flu out of your office

Flu season is upon us. Although it is hard to predict when the flu will be most active, the CDC says that it can start as early as October and last as late as May. The usual peak season for the flu is December through February. The single most effective way to protect yourself from the flu is to get a flu shot. They're pretty easy to come by. Outlets such as Walmart, CVS and Walgreen all provide the shots. Certainly you can get a flu shot at your doctor's office. The CDC recommends that we all get our shots but especially recommends them for folks at higher risk: · Children under 2 · Adults 65 and older · Pregnant women · Certain medical conditions, ...Asthma ...Heart Disease ...Diabetes There are some common sense steps you can take on an everyday basis to protect yourself. The easiest step is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. If you don't have access to soap and water use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Hand sanitizers are an effective and appreciated promotional product. They work well as a trade show giveaway, at job fairs, at recruitment sessions. They're small and lightweight so you could use them in a mail campaign. The most important thing to look for is an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Look for an alcohol content of at least 60% The CDC recommends sanitizers with an alcohol content of between 60% to 95%. After that you'll have all sorts of choices on size, colors, etc. Just make sure you get an alcohol based sanitizer with a content of between 60% to 95%

a great mix...business and chocolate

a great mix...business and chocolate

Halloween has come and gone but I'll bet the desire for chocolate has not. What's your favorite candy? When I was a kid my favorite was nonpareils. Love the chocolate wafer with the tiny, crunchy sugar balls. I'm also a big fan of black licorice. M&M's though are always at or near the top of my list. The debate is, which is better...the traditional M&M's or M&M's with peanuts. You can take the purist view that traditional M&M's are the only "real" M&M's. Or, you can take a more inclusive view that both types are OK. I resolve the dilemma by liking both! What is really cool is that now you can put your logo on them. Here are 3 types of appealing packaging options for your logo'd M&M's You can use these in many different business situations; as a sales call "leave behind," as a nice way to thank your team, at trade shows and conferences, as a "Thank You" for new business. You get the idea. Since pretty much everyone loves chocolate and M&M's are such a traditional favorite you can't go wrong with this idea. Call us now and we can have these to your staff and clients in time for the holidays. And stock up now for your next conference or trade show. Cheers, Robert

Raise your hand if you like being cold...

Raise your hand if you like being cold...

It's about 70 and sunny as I write this on Wednesday, October 29th. But we all know that pretty soon it's going to be freezing cold, snowy, sleety, slushy...you get the idea. And even though we think of Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California as sunny and warm, it can get chilly and damp of a winter's evening. I feel like I've been on this rant before. I really don't like cold weather. It's probably a pretty good bet that your clients don't like cold weather either, except for those who like to ski and snowboard. Others of us, who don't necessarily want to wear layer upon layer of clothing to stay warm while relaxing at night, need something to keep us warm. Here's a solution for the long, cold nights ahead. Fleece blankets. They make a thoughtful "Thank You" gift. Embroidered with your company's logo, these will be an instant hit! You can just hear your clients saying to their significant others, "hey hon will you hand me that blanket from (Your Name Here!) That's a very nice way to be remembered. These all come in a convenient vinyl carry bag with a rope handle (except for the children's blanket). Before your fingers are too cold to push the buttons on your smart phone, give us a call. These make sense for any kind of business and are also a great way to thank your staff.

You could get fleeced...

You could get fleeced...

Last week I was in Austin eating BBQ and enjoying temps near 90 and clear, sunny skies. As the plane departed for the trip back to Boston they gave an announcement about our arrival time and ended with "and the temperature in Boston is a very balmy 65..." Coming from temps near 90 I didn't think 65 was balmy at all! Seemed downright chilly. So now we're back in Boston. It's raining and cold...barely 60. This morning I went searching through my closet for something warm. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I have about eight kinds of fleece and another 4 or 5 sweatshirts. I have full zip and quarter zip. I have hoodies and no hoods. I need to live somewhere warm! But we don't live somewhere warm and the temps are only going to slide ever downward. Time to get fleeced! Time to fleece your clients and future clients. One of my favorite suppliers is Charles River Apparel. CRA is a family owned business right here in Massachusetts. They've been around for over 25 years. We also carry fleece jackets and vests from Columbia, Eddy Bauer, North Face, Patagonia and others. So, if you're up for fleecing your clients, now is the time to do it! Give us a call and we'll show you how to fleece your staff, your clients and anyone else

You don't need a weatherman

You don't need a weatherman

I got an email from a supplier advertising The Farmers' Almanac. It says we're going to have "a very cold, wet winter." Swell. A guy who works in the office across from us said the same thing. "Farmers' Almanac says this winter's going to be worse than last." Swell. To make myself even more despondent I went on-line to see what the Almanac had to say. It turns out, (and I think I already knew this), there are two Almanacs. One is The Farmers' Almanac (note the position of the apostrophe) and the other is The Old Farmer's Almanac. I thought there might be some juicy drama and it would make a great "Pick-Of-The-Week." Bitter rivals, badmouthing each other, sabotaging the printing presses, etc. etc. No such luck; they're competitors but no drama. Turns out that The Old Farmer's Almanac is the older of the two. It's been continuously published since 1792 (222 years) The current editor is Janice Stillman, the first women to hold the position. After 40 years of publishing and outlasting other almanacs "Old" was added to the title in 1832. The Farmers' Almanac was first published in 1818 in Morristown New Jersey. It's now published in Lewiston Maine. Its claim to fame is its top secret mathematical and astronomical formula for predicting the weather. Both are pretty terrible at forecasting the weather. Which is odd since both are sold for their supposed ability to peer into the future. Neither is better than chance. But, who cares if they can't predict the weather. We love them because they are beloved, traditional New England brands. You can predict that your clients and prospects will be happy when you give them a copy bearing your logo. I predict that you'll call us to place your order...it will make a much appreciated gift.

You know how bears load up before winter?

It's pretty well known that bears spend the Summer and Fall loading up on food before Winter sets in. What you might not know is that bears are not true hibernators. They just go into a deep sleep. Their metabolism, heart rate and respiration are not substantially lower than when awake. We're kind of like bears. (well at least I'm kind of like a bear.) We seem to be pulled toward foods that put on that extra layer for winter protection. Instead of that summer salad I'm more inclined to go for a pasta dish. Instead of no dessert or sorbet I'll go for the triple chocolate lava fudge cake, (withwhipped cream of course!) One way to look at these treats is that they're not really an indulgence but rather a survival necessity! Without them how are we expected to survive until Spring? Our favorite source for to-die-for gourmet gifts is Gifted Expressions. Having now spent two full afternoons taste testing their offerings I can attest to their deliciousness (if that's a word). All of their gifts are fresh and elegantly packaged. They have the ability to include your logo'd item (like a travel mug) into some of their gift baskets. And, of course, they offer imprinted ribbon. So, don't be like this poor fellow sitting there waiting for your treats...call us and we'll get your winter survival gifts ordered and sent off to your clients and future clients.

And along came a spider

Little Miss Muffet Sat on a tuffet Eating her curds and whey; Along came a spider, Who sat down beside her And frightened Miss Muffet away." Let me explain because I know a lot of you are thinking "he's got way too much time on his hands if he's writing about nursery rhymes." I got an email from one of my suppliers with this great gift idea for Halloween; the "Along Came A Spider" assorted candy treats. That got me to thinking; who was Miss Muffet? What exactly is a tuffet? What are curds and whey? What's with a spider? The most prevalent explanation, though there are others with one involving Mary Queen of Scots, is that the rhyme was written by Dr. Thomas Muffet, who was an English doctor and entomologist. (1553-1604). Miss Muffet was his stepdaughterPatience Muffet. Apparently, one of the Doctor's spiders got loose and scared her while she was eating her breakfast. OK, but what are "curds and whey" Basically it's cottage cheese. If you have the time check out the link, pretty interesting. And lastly, what's a tuffet? It's a low seat, like a stool. The other definition is that it's a clump or tuft of grass. So maybe our Miss Muffet was sitting outside eating her cottage cheese. Makes sense that she'd run into a spider if she were outdoors. This is all probably much more than you ever wanted to know about Little Miss Muffet, and perhaps we'll never know the real story. But. if you want to see some great ideas for Halloween gifts visit our Halloween Pinterest board.

Let's settle this once and for all

Let's settle this once and for all

I'm writing this on September 15th. Monday, September 22nd is the last day of Summer and, obviously, it follows that September 23rd is the first day of Autumn. The mornings are starting to get a little cooler and by the end of the month we'll start to see some trees starting to turn. By the beginning of October, it will definitely be cooler during the days and the nights will be crisp. Inevitably, sometime in October or maybe in November, we'll get a stretch of really warm days. Just as inevitably lots of folks will declare these days as "Indian Summer." So that you can sound like you know what you are talking about with your friends, here's how the The Old Farmer's Almanacdefines "Indian Summer.": "The warm days must follow a spell of cold weather or a good hard frost." "The conditions described above must occur between St. Martin's Day, November 1 and November 20." I have to admit that I didn't know that second condition. But, who am I to argue with the Old Farmer's Almanac? So, now that we've settled the Indian Summer controversy, here are a few gifts you can send for Halloween...that's October 31st.

Here's how you can earn your pardon

Here's how you can earn your pardon

Every year the president pardons a Thanksgiving turkey. Its a great photo op and sort of a silly publicity stunt. Did you ever wonder how this got started? No? Well I'm going to tell you anyway. Apparently people have been sending turkeys to the White House since the 1800's. (We've also elected a few turkeys to the White House but that is a completely different story.) It seems the tradition took hold firmly when Horace Vose, a Rhode Island farmer, sent an annual turkey to the White House between 1870 and 1913. After Horace died in 1913, the gifting was taken over by the National Turkey Federation. (Yes, there is such an organization...I couldn't make this stuff up!) Here's President Obama pardoning last year's turkey, "Popcorn" Did you know that there are 76 days between today (September 12, 2014) and Thanksgiving. • That's 2 months and 15 days. • There will be 54 week days and 22 weekend days. • That's 1824 hours. • 109,440 minutes • 6,566,400 seconds. The point is that you have plenty of time to select and send Thanksgiving cards to your clients and future clients. Sending Thanksgiving cards makes sense because your card will arrive before the crush of the December and January holidays. You'll stand out and get noticed...and remembered. You can see our entire selection of Thanksgiving cards on our website. Here's a few to get you started. All images are clickable links to the card. Sooner than you know it will be later than you think

That sounds like something Yogi Berra might say. My favorite Yogi quotes are: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded." "A nickle ain't worth a dime anymore." "It gets late early out there." "It's like deja vu all over again." "The future ain't what it used to be." The point of my Yogi-ism is to remind you that time is marching right along. In my "Pick" for August 15th, "It's a Rocket Sled Ride" I posted links to downloadable calendars to help you plan the next 4 months. I also had a link to a nifty tool that lets you calculate the time between any two dates. Today, I go one better! Here's a link to a Christmas countdown clock You could set this as your wallpaper and really drive yourself nuts! The point is, if you're going to be sending holiday cards and/or holiday food gifts, now is the time to start planning. Christmas hasn't been moved, it's still December 25th. (it's a Thursday) Thanksgiving is still the last Thursday in November. (it's the 27th) And January 1st is still the first day of the New Year. (it's also a Thursday) Don't let the holidays catch you by surprise...start planning now by giving us a call. Cheers, Robert

Pink October

October is national breast cancer awareness month. Do you know the history of the pink ribbon (and why it's pink and not some other color? Hint...it didn't start out pink). Throughout October the NFL will feature players with pink accessories like their shoes and gloves. Major League Baseball chose Mother's Day to promote awareness of efforts to fund research and treatment. Many companies elect to promote awareness and participation by distributing pink items to their staff. We have an extensive selection of October Breast Cancer Awareness items on our Pinterest boards. To the right you'll find a few suggestions to get you started. We will make a donation of 10% of your purchase of any "pink" item. Donations will go to the Susan G. Komen fund. Give us a call and in no time you'll be in the Pink! Cheers, Robert

Wine not?

I don't want you to get the wrong impression. I can see how you might with my following of last week's "Pick," (about craft beers), with this week's about wine accessories. I can assure you it's pure coincidence. A few years ago we hosted a big family Thanksgiving. One of the relatives, (to remain unnamed), was being especially argumentative. My wife's cousin Susan was taking it all in with a serene smile. My wife asked "how can you remain so pleasant?" Susan lifted her wine glass, as if toasting, and replied..."that's what wine is for!" So, as we get closer to Thanksgiving and the holidays, you can consider gifts to help your clients achieve the same serene state as Susan. Here are eight wine tool sets that will be gratefully received and eagerly deployed in the familial combat known as the holidays. Each image is a clickable link to a larger image and price details. Relax, have a glass of wine and then call us to talk about getting these gifts to your clients. Cheers, Robert
